Characteristics
¢  Embroiderers record their culture, surroundings, experiences, perceptions and emotions
¢  Images from their surroundings, magazines and events in their daily lives
¢  Pictures and comments such as “Peace in our Land”, a rabbit in a speed boat, a mermaid with transistor radio are but a few topics
¢  bright, multi-hued style
¢  Texture evident from the stitches of embroidery
¢  Nature evident in animals, trees, flowers
¢  Tradition and culture
¢  Wonderful spontaneity

Materials
¢  Organic materials
¢  use heir hands, needle and cloth
¢  They use needle and thread to ‘draw’ and ‘paint’ images
¢  The embroidery is done on Fasco or Fabella - a 100% cotton fabric
¢  Fabric and cotton are produced in South Africa

Technnique and Process
¢  collect fabric and various yarns from the studio,
¢  return home and
¢  execute the decorative cloths.
¢  Drawings are done
¢  Once the cloths are completed they are returned to their studio
¢  quality checked and thereafter marketed

¢  Sales
¢  Exhibitions
¢  Sold by the Rural Crafts Association, the Durban African Art Centre and various shops in South Africa
